Mercury amalgamation was the initial method used for centuries to process gold and is still in use today by artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Globally, ASGM is the second largest source of atmospheric mercury pollution after coal combustion . Another method of Au extraction uses cyanide in a two-stage process; extraction and recovery. Gold is first dissolved using cyanide in the extraction stage and the dissolved gold is then recovered from the cyanide solution by cementing with zinc or adsorption onto activated carbon. The cyanide extraction processes could be heap leach or vat/tank leach depending on the quality of the ores. In ores of higher gold content, the vat/tank leaching is employed, which involves leaching of the crushed and ground ore in large enclosed tanks equipped with agitators to dissolve the gold which then adheres to pieces of the activated carbon. The activated carbon and the gold are then stripped of the solution and the barren solution together with the leached ore are discarded. The heap leach is used for low-grade ore and involves extraction of crushed oxide gold ore piled onto plastic-lined pads with leaching solvents such as acids or cyanide to dissolve the gold which is collected at the bottom of the pad .

Filming of Season 11, and mining for the 2020 mining season was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Though miners were considered essential workers by the Yukon government, the film crews themselves are not part of that determination. Canada having been on travel lockdown at the start of the filming season meant that the production crews from RAW TV production company were still stuck in Britain. At the start of mining, only one filming crewmember was onsite with the Beets, and Monica Beets had added on filming duties. Neither the Schnabel nor Ness mining crews were onsite at the start of the mining season, they've been at home in quarantine, mostly in the U.S. For the new mining season; Parker Schnabel successfully crosses the border from Alaska and quarantines for two weeks in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. The Beets quarantine for 2 weeks at their mine site, and plan to have it locked down for the season. After a 2-week quarantine, a local film crew of 4 comes to film the Beets. Rick Ness quarantines while on the road from Wisconsin to the Yukon, with an extended fuel tank for his pickup, by limiting any contact while roadtripping. The international Minamata Convention on Mercury entered into force in 2017 with Article 7 specifically directed at Hg releases from ASGM. In ASGM, liquid elemental Hg is added to sediment or ores to isolate gold. This amalgam is subsequently heated, which concentrates the gold and releases gaseous elemental Hg (GEM; Hg0) into the atmosphere. Amalgam burning often occurs without a retort or other Hg-capturing device, though efforts are being undertaken by groups such as the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Global Mercury Partnership, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and non-governmental organizations to encourage miners to mitigate Hg emissions. As of this writing in 2021, 132 countries including Peru have signed onto the Minamata Convention and have begun to develop National Action Plans to specifically address Hg reductions in association with ASGM. Scholars have called on these National Action Plans to be inclusive, ongoing, and holistic, considering both socioeconomic drivers and environmental harms15,16,17,18. Current plans to address the consequences of Hg in the environment focus on Hg risks associated with ASGM near aquatic ecosystems, involving miners and those living near amalgam burning, and involving communities that consume large quantities of predatory fish. Occupational Hg exposure via inhalation of Hg vapors from amalgam burning, dietary Hg exposure via the consumption of fish, and bioaccumulation of Hg in the aquatic food web have been the focus of most scientific studies related to ASGM, including early studies in the Amazon (e.g., see Lodenius and Malm19).
